Application Scientist

Cobalt develops innovative spectroscopic analysis products with applications in the pharmaceutical industry, academia and security markets. In our young and growing instrumentation company, this role will predominantly involve supporting sales by developing spectroscopic methods for batch release testing. You will analyse either customer supplied samples or samples you have prepared in our laboratory and, by using the strengths of Raman spectroscopy, maximise the information that can be derived. This analysis will provide models for compositional determination (qualitative or quantitative) and used as a proof of concept for our customers.

Reporting to the Applications Manager, the two products you will be primarily working with will be our transmission Raman and our spatially-offset Raman system although you may need to assist in testing of our security products and new developments, as business needs dictate. All work must be documented and sales personnel briefed. You may be asked to present to customers either directly or over webinar and handle technical questions.

You will also be responsible for capturing your growing experience and knowledge of the systems hardware and software by reporting and tracking issues, suggesting improvements, updating and contributing to maintaining system documentation, all within our quality management system.

Customer training is provided for new installations and for new applications support. With your knowledge of the systems fully established, this will be an increasing part of your role.

Essential Skills:

  • Spectroscopy experience : Either Raman , near-infrared, mid-infrared, THz
  • Laboratory experience: handling hazardous powders/liquids, independently assessing risks and appropriate personal protection, maintaining cleanliness, keeping good experimental notes.
  • Good numeracy : working with Excel
  • Good presentation skills: adapting technical content to audience level, comfortable taking questions or being challenged publically
  • Able to travel: Approximately 5% of time at customers sites world-wide, normally no more than 1 week at a time.

Advantageous Skills:

  • Design of Experiments (DoE)
  • Chemometrics / Multivariate analysis experience
  • Knowledge of secondary pharmaceutical manufacturing unit operations
  • Experience of working in or working with a regulated industry. Of particular interest is Pharmaceuticals (GxP)
  • Experience of equipment commissioning or Computer System Validation within a regulated industry

Senior Support Engineer

Based in: Abingdon, Oxford, UK

Skilled engineer or technician required for service and support of laser based measurement instruments. Candidates must have a significant practical ability track record, with both mechanical and electronic knowledge, and be prepared to travel both within the UK, Europe and North America.

The successful applicant will liaise with and draw on the rest of the Cobalt team to install, maintain, fault-find, repair and service optical, mechanical and electrical systems both at the company’s site and in the field.

The support aspect of the role includes receiving customer support requests, creating records and scheduling responses, all within a quality system framework. This includes both scheduled and responsive activities.

This role includes a significant sales function requirement handling both service contracts and the specification and delivery of aftermarket system accessories, in conjunction with the customer and the engineering team.

Further Detailed Duties:

  • Hands-on system build as a means of receiving Cobalt based training on Cobalt’s systems
  • Scheduling own time and other resources for the installation and maintenance of systems
  • Organising the specification, cataloguing and delivery of system accessories in conjunction with the customer and the engineering team
  • Improving existing and establishing new training documentation for use with both customers and distributors; providing training as required on customer and distributor sites
  • Operating within a quality system framework and updating and creating quality documents where necessary
  • Communicating any requirements and deficiencies to the relevant Cobalt teams
  • Adherence to relevant standards and directives, as required for the product qualification
  • Electrical and electronic, build, test and debug of custom and standard systems
  • Familiarly with computer systems and software installation is an advantage
  • Develop service tools, jigs, procedures and standards to improve efficiencies
  • Travel will include UK, Europe, North America and potentially further afield supporting both customers and distributors

Required Skills:

  • Experience in supporting laboratory and production equipment
  • Qualifications in relevant disciplines
  • Good communication skills
  • Full UK driving licence
