Spatially Offset Raman Spectroscopy (SORS) patent granted in the USA
Cobalt Light Systems Limited (Cobalt) announces that a key patent application underpinning its proprietary Spatially Offset Raman Spectroscopy (SORS) technology has been granted in the USA;
Matousek, P. and Parker A.W., “Apparatus for Depth-Selective Raman Spectroscopy”, US 7,652,763.
SORS is a novel spectroscopic method for characterizing sub-surface layers of materials. It has a number of emerging practical applications such as the screening of unknown substances within opaque plastic or coloured glass bottles, which has clear security uses and Cobalt will shortly deliver a custom large stand-off SORS system for such an application. SORS also has medical applications – for example for the screening of lesions in breast cancer, or the chemical analysis of bone in vivo. SORS also has many applications for academic research. To exploit its SORS technology, Cobalt recently launched the Triton product which is a flexible benchtop system for SORS, as well as Transmission and regular back-scatter Raman.
