Cobalt Light Systems is a multi-award winning – including Queen’s Award for Enterprise (2015), top of The Sunday Times BT Business SME Export Track 100 (2015), top ten of The Sunday Times Hiscox Tech Track 100 (2014), Royal Academy of Engineering MacRobert Award (2014) – SME commercializing applications of Raman Spectroscopy. Our pharmaceutical systems are in use around the world for content and raw material verification, and our Liquid Explosive Detection System (LEDS) product is in operation in 8 of the 10 major European hub airports.
Underpinning all these products are algorithms to extract the desired, relatively weak, signal from the background. The signal can then be input to detection/classification algorithms. Finally, the more systems we have generating data, the more data we have for performing meta analyses that can feed back into product enhancements. As the company’s business and product portfolio has expanded, a position has arisen for a data analyst to contribute across this spectrum of activities.
This role will ideally suit an early career stage candidate wanting to demonstrate and hone their data analytics skills in a cutting edge technology area. Reporting to the Data Science Manager, your work is likely to involve identifying suitable datasets for analysis, designing practical experiments to answer specific questions (if suitable data do not already exist), conducting such experiments and analysing the results to produce a report to inform a wider audience within the company (from support engineer to CEO); researching and developing algorithms for exploiting spectral data from instruments, writing algorithm definition documents and implementing such algorithms for deployment and use within Cobalt’s processing software; performing meta analyses across systems; contributing to/developing visualization (dashboard) tools for use across the company. As such, you will be expected to gain hands-on experience with company products and hardware, improve/augment the processing capability of our software, and employ data science techniques to identify factors influencing system performance.
- R and/or Python (Numpy/SciPy, Pandas, scikit-learn)
- Degree in a numerate/scientific/computing/statistical subject
- Some experience with multivariate analysis techniques
- Excellent experimental design skills
- Excellent programming skills
- Keen analytical mind
- Signal processing
- Some experience extracting data from RDBMs systems such as MySQL and SQLite
- Matlab and/or C
- Experience with both Linux and Windows
