New Application Note Describes Safe Identification of Synthetic Opioids Through Unopened Opaque Packaging

The current rise in the prevalence of Fentanyls and New Psychoactive Substances (NPS) presents a major challenge to law enforcement professionals. Variants of Fentanyl have multiple possible routes of exposure and are reportedly 10’s to 1000’s times more potent than heroin, with fatal doses comparable to a few grains of sugar. Similarly, several NPS have active doses measured in micrograms. There are a multitude of reports in the public domain from around the world that describe accidental exposure of officers to either Fentanyls or NPS with serious medical consequences.

Resolve uses Cobalt’s proprietary Spatially Offset Raman Spectroscopy (SORS) technology to identify hazardous materials, explosives and narcotics concealed behind single and multiple barriers such as coloured and opaque plastics, glass, paper, card, wrapping and fabrics. The use of Resolve allows operators to examine a maximum range of packages or containers for indications of Fentanyl or NPS prior to disturbing, opening or taking a sample. This practice reduces the risk of exposure and enables more efficient decision making and processes.
